Dun Laoghaire, like the rest of Ireland, is full of history and charm.
The tide was low and there was a father and his daughter with small fishing nets on sticks finding live treasures in the tide pools. They filled their buckets with baby shrimp, eels, dogfish, crayfish, starfish...
These seawater baths were in full working order just a short 30+ years ago. Now they are in ruins, but KW and I dreamily imagine they were never shut down! How glorious would that be?
One of the benefits of leading the walking group through the Dublin City Council every week is that I learn so much about Irish history. One little tidbit I learned a couple weeks ago was about these lovely structures all along the Dun Laoghaire coastline. They were called waiting boxes and were set up along the old tram tracks, which have long since been covered over by road. Though they are not in use today, they are maintained and line the streets with history.
